Impacts of Mental Health on Diabetes Complications

In this study we are exploring how timing of mental health disorders affects the timing of diabetic microvascular and microvascular complications in diabetic patients. We want to understand whether having a mental health disorder increases the likelihood of having a micro/macrovascular complication and vice-versa. Some of our mental health disordrs of interest include anxiety, depression, ADHD, and PTSD. Our micro/macrovascular complications include neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy, and stroke.

I have been leading the statistical analysis on this project using the Optum Analytics database, the largest insurance claims repository in the United States. I performed survival analysis and modeling to describe time to mental health disorders and time to micro/macrovascular complications. Using Cox-proportional hazard models we hope to understand how likely patients with diabetes and mental health disorders were to develop micro/macrovascular complications and vice-versa.
